Every vehicle in California must comply with specific requirements before being processed by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Basic transfers between a buyer and seller must include the following:
  • Vehicle Title or Application for Title (reg 343)
  • CA Smog Certificate
  • Ensure both a buyer and seller have completed information on all documents
There are some cases where the vehicle has had multiple buyers and sellers without the vehicle being officially registered with DMV. In a case like this, a chain of ownership is required so that DMV can verify the amount of transfers that are associated with the vehicle in question. The best way to verify chain of ownership is to fill out a Vehicle Transfer and Reassignment Form (reg 262) for each ownership, this form must be original and cannot be a copy. To obtain an original form for free you can visit your local DMV office.

Processing transfers can happen by either visiting a local DMV office OR a Second Business Provider such as Redline Registration Services to avoid big wait lines and receive exceptional customer service.
